This ranking evaluates the most common hair supplements based on the strength of published clinical research, not marketing claims.

How to Read This Ranking

Each supplement is evaluated on three criteria: the quality of clinical evidence supporting its use for hair growth, the populations most likely to benefit, and important caveats about safety and effectiveness. The ranking uses a tier system from strongest evidence to weakest.

A critical principle underlies this entire analysis: most supplements for hair work by correcting deficiencies. If you are not deficient in a nutrient, supplementing with more of it will rarely improve your hair. This is why blood testing before supplementing is more valuable than blindly taking a multivitamin hair complex.

Tier 1: Strong Evidence When Deficient

Iron (Ferritin)

Evidence strength: Strong for deficient individuals

Important caveats: Do not supplement iron without blood testing first. Excess iron causes serious toxicity including liver damage. Men and postmenopausal women rarely need iron supplementation and should only take it if blood work confirms deficiency. A systematic review in Skin Appendage Disorders examined all published biotin supplementation studies and concluded that evidence of benefit existed almost exclusively in patients with underlying biotin deficiency or specific genetic conditions affecting biotin metabolism. For the general population with normal biotin levels, supplementation has not been shown to improve hair growth in controlled trials.

Who benefits: The small percentage of people with documented biotin deficiency — including those taking certain anticonvulsants, chronic alcohol users, pregnant women (who have increased biotin demands), and individuals with genetic biotinidase deficiency. Raw egg white consumption can also cause biotin depletion.

Address deficiencies specifically. If your ferritin is low, take iron. If your vitamin D is deficient, take vitamin D. Targeted supplementation based on blood work is more effective and safer than taking a multi-ingredient hair vitamin containing nutrients you may not need.
